Raft Series 1995
New works by Joan Hall and Juan Sanchez
(Text from the review in the St Louis Post Dispatch by Carol Ferring Shepley September 14, 1995)
Many political artists used their work to make comments promoting the cause of women and minorities. In their own ways, Joan Hall and Juan Sanchez each speak to the politics of the people of the Caribbean in their work.
Hall of St Louis, pours handmade paper into huge wall constructions, using a medium on the boundary between prints, painting and sculptures. She sometimes uses political ideas to generate her beautiful abstractions.
Both of these artists have messages that they present in an aesthetic fashion. They have not neglected the way their art looks in favor of what it says, as many political artists do.
